Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I produced a website for a new TV channel that I had to make up which I called Radioactive. To make my TV show I had to create a genre for my channel and the types of shows that I planned to feature on it, I created my own TV show called Struck to headline with the up and coming new channel. After I finished my website after the research and planning process I published it on Weebly. I chose to create a moving ident for my channel and newspaper advertisement to promote my channel.

My website for my channel uses the forms and conventions of real media products; the site is simply set out in a manner that is easily navigated around like other websites that I have researched. My menu bar contains the 5 major parts to a website one which is the Home page, I used the normal convention of the headlining TV show to be the focus point of the page, this set the standard to gain the audience’s attention and advertise the TV show.

When you scroll down the page it firstly shows Featured Videos like TV channels such as Fox TV and Watch have on their website. I used three short video clips on my featured videos to prioritize my
main three TV shows; I added my very own teaser trailer in a bigger clip box to draw the audience to this one more. I kept to the normal conventions of a TV website by involving shows, a poll and what not to miss this informs my audience the basics of what they might look at my website to find. Along the bottom I took the idea of Fox TV when they had extra information for their audience that consisted of social media, sign up to get more newsletters, more about Radioactive and how to get Radioactive. As I was minimized to 10 pages to display my channel across I hyper-linked ‘More about our new channel’ and ‘How to get RADIOACTIVE’ I thought this was important to inform my audience about the new channel and for them to get an understanding for it.

For my Shows page I had a simple page showing all of the shows that my channel will be featuring, I involved present and past shows on my channel this was common when it came to researching shows such as Fox TV as they had reruns of old shows and I wanted to use this convention while producing my channel. I had three tabs on my Shows page button which was Struck, The Vampire Diaries and True
Blood these will be my main three channels, I picked these channels specifically because they represent the supernatural theme of my channel and they've all done very well when it comes to popularity and that will bring more attention to my channel. I've found through research that most TV channels have a few top shows this is a normal convection that I have followed to make them the focus point of the channel. On each of the three pages I created for my channel I included an ‘About this channel’ text box to inform my target audience of what the TV shows were about. I also showcased a teaser trailer, pictures, cast and related TV shows like how a real TV channel would feature about their shows. I made a Schedule page that had two different viewing options the first was a daily view of the TV shows times and the other being a weekly view of show times. This is one of the main conventions of a TV channel and is very important to enable the audience to be look at the times that their favourite shows will be on. I created a News and Competitions page for my channel also, I went with the normal convention for this because having a news page informs the audience about what’s going on with the channel and the shows that they want to watch, by having a competitions page involved the audience especially by having a poll that worked.

At the top of every page on my website I had my logo; this is
important as it represents the channel and is the recognisable image that people will know, I used a green glow around my logo to indicate that my channel is dangerous like it is giving off a radioactive toxic mist. My House style is black and green colour schemed that consisted all the way through my website and onto my ident, this is another recognisable point to my channel as it will trigger my audience’s attention. The font is another focus point as it’s edgy and sharp kind of like vampire teeth that pairs well with my channel genre.

I made a short animated ident to go with my channel I used the conventions of the house and font style from my channel and website to pair up with my ident and having a running theme throughout. My ident is 10 seconds long and I uploaded the finished product to YouTube. I followed the normal conventions of TV idents found in my research they were short and simple to just let the audience know that it was their channel that they will be watching. I kept my ident dark with a light highlighting my logo to give off a dangerous and deadly aura. when the light passed over the font it give off a dewy/gritty shine almost like the font was a toxic puss, the ident gave off what the channel would be featuring and that it wouldn't be some realistic channel like BBC1.

I changed my colour scheme for the newspaper advertisement to red as even though it's apart of my channel it's separate because it's a TV show. I used a red and black colour scheme because red represents danger and blood and black represents darkness and death. I went against the normal conventions in how I kept the font same for the Struck logo and my Radioactive logo, I decided to keep it the same because it's headlining and the show is pairing up with the channel so therefore I wanted them to have a connection somewhere. I used a black and white image of my main character in a close up shot on my advert. I dressed my main character in black and lacy clothing to have a dangerous and seductive presence about her. Like most TV channel advertisement they show the strong main character in a high productive TV show. I used the idea of adding a slogan into my advert because of inspiration like True Blood, they have many short snappy slogans for the audience to recognise. I kept the font white and highlighted the word 'colours' in red to represent the vampire blood side of my show. I added my TV channel in the top right corner for people to know that this show is going to be on the Radioactive channel and it will advertise the channel in a newspaper.
